Protein for the World: Insects in the Spotlight

01.09.2018 – 30.06.2019

How will we possibly be able to feed the world’s population of over 9 billion people in about 30 years? How can we ensure that there is enough protein for everyone? This exhibition gives an overview of foods rich in protein, explores the cultural significance of insect consumption and gives insight into the industrial breeding and processing of insects.

The exhibition shows the development of the world’s population and their protein requirement, taking a special interest in sustainable alternatives. Today’s average diet needs to be reworked: In order to sustainably feed everyone, we need to change our approach to both animal and plant protein. In 30 years, the current food industry will not be able to meet the demand in protein. Emissions, produced by the food industry, keep rising, leading to rapid changes in our climate.

The variety of insects and their consumption is examined by looking at different projects from all over the globe. The visitors can watch the Danish movie Bugs – produced in cooperation with the Nordic Food Lab – or learn the details of the industrial processing from the Black Soldier Fly to animal feed, an insight we gain thanks to the cooperation with Bühler Insect Technology AG. Their new approach to the production of high-quality protein is mostly unknown and could be part of a more sustainable farming method for fish, chicken and pig products.
